Hello world. Or should I say “Hi again” since this is actually the second blog I have had in my lifetime. I started my first blog way back in the year 2000 and it was called “Where the Hell is Dave!?” (Shout out to SW for naming my blog!) and featured a paste of my face on Waldo’s body.
In a way it is rather auspicious since it was about this time 10 years ago that I was planning to set out on a new journey. The plan was then to leave the US and take up an xpat life overseas, first to the UK and Africa after that. Anyone who knows me knows that this is exactly what happened — and I have to admit that it is kind of strange when you realize that you actually accomplished what you set out to do. Anyway, it is 10 years on and I am now starting my prep for the next big adventure … traveling overland from the Mediterranean to the Pacific.
Naturally, establishing a blog (or reestablishing as the case may be) is requisite component these days, and who I am to fly in the face of convention? So, here is my first entry of my new blog of my new adventure … rather underwhelming in a way isn’t it? I guess you gotta start somewhere.
I suppose it is a good idea to set out some goals and expectations for this blog so it does not become yet another empty shell in a dust back corner of the Internet, to wit:
Some Aims & Goals For Myself for my Blog
- I will use this blog to keep my family and friends informed as to my whereabouts and intended plans
- I will use this blog as the foundation for my “digital persona” (the hub of the wheel)
- I will use this blog to document my travels and to record my thoughts and feelings throughout my travels, trials and tribulations
- I will post a minimum of 3 entries per week (when technically feasible)
- I will write a minimum of 900 words per week (even when off-line)
Some Things YOU Can Expect from ME on this Blog
- Regular updates and location information
- Links out to my other digital personae, including my photography
- Most probably some bad and overly pompous writing
- Honesty in my observations and insights
- My sincere hope that, through this blog, you will be with me in spirit and in substance as I make this journey
Many have commented that they envy (in a good way) my freedom or admire me in this undertaking. I certainly do not feel worthy of envy or admiration, and I know only too well that life on the road is sometimes not something to be admired. Regardless, I do feel a sense of obligation. I do have a freedom and I do have a sense of adventure. These are gifts and gifts should never be forsaken or taken for granted, something I have learned the hard way. So, it is my humble hope that what what is written here, on these electronic pages, in some way is of service to that obligation and honors the gifts I am so fortunate to have.
