Well, I’m back in cold and wet Seattle now! I flew in from Athens to Portland, Oregon last Friday and went straight for the coast to attend the birthday party of a very dear friend. I have to admit, there is a certain cachet  in dropping into a weekend beach party direct from Athens … [...]

Today is the big day in Athens and no one is really sure what is going to happen today. In 2009 and 2010 the demonstrations to commemorate the death of Alexis Grigoropoulos turned very violent very quickly. Everyone I have spoken with is unsure what will go down today. There are two main protests planned for [...]

So I landed in Athens, Greece last night after a mad dash from LA to Seattle then on to Portland to catch my flight. Crazy, I know, but it’s the life I seem to be living at the moment. =) A quick recap on what I am working on here in Athens … I have [...]

Just the other day I posted about how impressed I was with both the LAPD and #OccupyLA. Well, LA has certainly taken an ugly turn over the last couple of days. On Wednesday night the LAPD overran the Occupy encampment that had taken root in the 1.7 acre park attached to the west side of [...]

So I’ve been in LA for the last couple of weeks and am about to fly back to Seattle and then on to Athens, Greece on Wednesday. The other day, the Mayor of LA issued orders to close City Hall park to the Occupy protest citing “health and safety” concerns. OccupyLA is one of the [...]

I’ve been dragging my feet on this blog post and this will probably be the last chance I’ll get to get this posted before I head off on safari for the next week. As most of you know, I lived in Tanzania for seven years and left in 2007 to move to Budapest. This is [...]

Just a quick, and long overdue, update as to where I am, where I have been and what’s ahead. First, a grateful tip of the hat to my good friend A. Estes for the “Geographically Unstable” quote — a very funny descriptor of my experience of life the last couple of years! So, lets start [...]

A long over due update from the itinerant traveler and intermittent blogger … As I write this I am on my way back to Australia for a couple of months. I will be participating with the Mardi Gras PhotoTeam as Sydney puts on one of the largest LGBT events in the word: The Sydney Mardi [...]

So I’m back in Seattle after an amazing amazing 10 day trip to Athens!  It’s hard to put in words all that happened and I know I tried to blog post a couple of times while I was there and just utterly failed.  Maybe it was because I was feeling so guilty for having so [...]

So I arrived in Athens 7 hours later than originally planned and without my bag! Bad weather in NY caused our flight to be divereted and by the time I got to JFK my flight was long gone. They rerouted me through Paris but my bags never left JFK – hoping that it arrives later this afternoon … fingers crossed.

For those that might be wondering, “what the hell is Dave doing in Athens??” … here is the quick rundown of what I am up to:
About this time last year I passed through Athens and covered some demonstrations marking the 2nd anniversary of the shooting death by police of 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in 2008, which sparked 3 months of rioting that shook Greece to it’s core. This year I am for 10 days to do some reporting with the Common Language Project, a Seattle based nonprofit, to do some reporting on what’s happening here in Athens.

I will be triangulating my stories around 3 key issues:

* The death of Grigoropoulos as symptomatic of police-community relationship
* The law of “University Asylum” which prevents police from entering onto the campus of any University of College
* Profiling the neighborhood of Exarcheia, also known as the “Anarchist District” in central Athens

While here I will be recording audio, taking photos and writing stories to create a multi-dimensional picture of what is going on. In part, this is an exploration of my own ability to capture and produce material to produce multimedia stories. It is also an experiment with new forms of journalism and with the possibilities that crowdsourcing/crowdfunding make avilable.

Here are several links to follow my progress and keep up with my reporting:
