Well, I’m back in cold and wet Seattle now! I flew in from Athens to Portland, Oregon last Friday and went straight for the coast to attend the birthday party of a very dear friend. I have to admit, there is a certain cachet  in dropping into a weekend beach party direct from Athens … [...]

Today is the big day in Athens and no one is really sure what is going to happen today. In 2009 and 2010 the demonstrations to commemorate the death of Alexis Grigoropoulos turned very violent very quickly. Everyone I have spoken with is unsure what will go down today. There are two main protests planned for [...]

So I’m back in Seattle after an amazing amazing 10 day trip to Athens!  It’s hard to put in words all that happened and I know I tried to blog post a couple of times while I was there and just utterly failed.  Maybe it was because I was feeling so guilty for having so [...]

So I arrived in Athens 7 hours later than originally planned and without my bag! Bad weather in NY caused our flight to be divereted and by the time I got to JFK my flight was long gone. They rerouted me through Paris but my bags never left JFK – hoping that it arrives later this afternoon … fingers crossed.

For those that might be wondering, “what the hell is Dave doing in Athens??” … here is the quick rundown of what I am up to:
About this time last year I passed through Athens and covered some demonstrations marking the 2nd anniversary of the shooting death by police of 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in 2008, which sparked 3 months of rioting that shook Greece to it’s core. This year I am for 10 days to do some reporting with the Common Language Project, a Seattle based nonprofit, to do some reporting on what’s happening here in Athens.

I will be triangulating my stories around 3 key issues:

* The death of Grigoropoulos as symptomatic of police-community relationship
* The law of “University Asylum” which prevents police from entering onto the campus of any University of College
* Profiling the neighborhood of Exarcheia, also known as the “Anarchist District” in central Athens

While here I will be recording audio, taking photos and writing stories to create a multi-dimensional picture of what is going on. In part, this is an exploration of my own ability to capture and produce material to produce multimedia stories. It is also an experiment with new forms of journalism and with the possibilities that crowdsourcing/crowdfunding make avilable.

Here are several links to follow my progress and keep up with my reporting:

Hey! You! … Yes, you! Got a spare $5 or $10 bucks you want to throw my way?? Seriously.  I’m heading to Athens, Greece to do some reporting and I am asking my community to support me (this would be called crowdfunding) to help cover my on-the-ground costs! In the district of Exarcheia in central Athens you never know quite what to expect along the narrow streets which are full of shops, restaurants and bars … Hipster musicians and communists, high school students out for some fun and drunks on every corner. University students coming and going between the all night kebab shops [...]

It has been a busy last few days, but I have survived unscathed and not any worse for the wear. Being Athens during the protests has been a very interesting experience and I’m not sure yet what I think about it all. Anyway, I have published 4 stories on Demotix and I invite you to [...]

Here are a few photos from last night.  There was some sporadic action with protesters overturning some dumpsters and setting them on fire.  What was interesting how mundane of an action this was as none of the “average citizens” reacted as if anything special was happening.  There is a real resentment towards the police here [...]

Getting to Athens has been an interesting experience, but I made it safe and sound although a bit wet as the weather has turned a bit.  While Athens may be a big destination for a normal tourist I am really here for one just reason: to cover the demonstrations (riots) to commemorate the one year [...]
